Logo Ideation & Creation Strategizing

A new client recently came to us seeking expertise while creating the logo for their new startup company.

We worked to understand some of their most important requirements for the logo, which included looking different from others in their industry (most of whose logos contain a heavy presence of shades of blue), and for the icon portion of the logo to be distinguishable on its own, as it would serve as their app’s icon. 📱

The client had already begun work on their website’s UI, too, which primarily featured a dark charcoal grey color palette. We chose a bright color for the logo that was “bright but not too bright,” and also looked good on this dark color. We wanted the opposite to be true, too; this client envisioned the future with this logo appearing on letterhead, etc., so we made sure the logo looked just as good and as clear to read on a white background as on the dark background. 📄

Finally, this client tapped into some of my expertise from working with corporate swag and merch in order to ensure the logo was optimized for the physical world, too! This meant choosing a font that was unique, but still easy to replicate, and not too serif-y! We steered away from elements that would be problematic to embroider, like avoiding incorporating the icon portion into the text of the company name.

Because this client spent time thinking through all of these potential use cases during the logo ideation and creation processes, they’re going to be able to save a costly, time-consuming, and perhaps even haphazard rebrand later when the logo suddenly doesn’t adequately support one of the envisioned uses.

What do you wish you knew during your logo creation that you know now and would incorporate better? Do you have a great logo, but it doesn’t lend itself well to swag because of some problematic elements? Are you a startup or a company in the midst of considering a rebrand and want to make sure your new logo is going to be suitable for all of your envisioned use cases?
